The Eagala Model

The Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association (EAGALA) is the leading global organization and recognized standard for equine-assisted psychotherapy. Eagala certifies credentialed mental health professionals and equine specialists through comprehensive training, assessment, and ongoing mentorship to ensure high standards of practice.

The Eagala Model is a team approach, bringing together a licensed mental health professional, an equine specialist, and a carefully selected herd of horses to support the therapeutic process. Sessions take place entirely on the ground—there is no riding or horsemanship instruction involved, and no previous horse experience is necessary.

Clients engage in hands-on experiential activities with the horses that naturally bring thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and relationship patterns into awareness. Horses respond honestly and authentically in the moment, offering opportunities for insight, reflection, and growth in ways that are often difficult to access through conversation alone.
